The New Jersey Devils can’t seem to solve their struggles at home. Fortunately, they’ve been perfect on the road. The short-handed Devils look to bounce back from a poor effort and remain undefeated as a visitor Thursday night when they meet the Boston Bruins, who are dealing with injury issues as well. In its first game without defenseman Paul Martin (broken left arm) and left wing Jay Pandolfo (separated right shoulder), each of whom are expected to miss at least four weeks, New Jersey (6-4-0) was lackluster in a 4-1 loss to Buffalo on Wednesday.

Brodeur, the all-time wins leader who remains one shutout shy of tying Terry Sawchuk’s NHL record of 103, has won seven of his last nine starts against Boston (5-4-1), posting a 2.07 GAA. After missing four months following elbow surgery, he made only one start against the Bruins last season, stopping 26 shots in a 4-1 road loss on March 22. The Devils have alternated wins and losses in their last six visits to Boston. The Bruins have shown consistency can be a problem for them so far.

The Bruins scored twice in the final 1:28 in regulation to tie the game and Patrice Bergeron scored the lone shootout goal. Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas made 27 saves through overtime for his fourth win of the season.Boston also lost two key players recently. Forwards Marc Savard (broken foot) and Milan Lucic (broken finger) are expected to miss at least the next month. After a slow start, the Bruins believe they’re ready to get on a roll after coming away with points in their last three games.

The Ottawa Senators are off to a surprising start, and another meeting with the Tampa Bay Lightning may only help. Coming off a victory over Florida’s other NHL club, the Senators look to continue their dominance of teams from the Sunshine State on Thursday night when they visit the Lightning. Last season, the Senators (6-2-2) missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 seasons, and they were hoping to show improvement in 2009-10.

Ottawa continued its impressive start Wednesday, beating the Panthers 4-3 as four Senators scored. The victory also continued the club’s outstanding success in Florida as Ottawa improved to 24-6-2 with a tie in its last 33 visits to Miami and Tampa Bay. The Senators have dominated the Lightning (3-3-3), posting a 26-5-2 overall record with a tie dating to the 1999-2000 season. They beat them for the fourth consecutive time Oct. 15, as Milan Michalek had a hat trick in a
7-1 victory.

The Lightning fell to 1-2-1 in their last four games following a 3-2 shootout loss to Buffalo on Saturday, as they gave up the tying goal with 17 seconds left in regulation. Tampa Bay has lost all three games that have reached the tiebreaker after dropping 10 of 13 last season. Steven Stamkos , who scored a goal Saturday before missing his shootout attempt, has a five-game point
streak, during which he’s totaled five goals and two assists. He had a career-high six-game streak March 12-24. The second-year center leads the Lightning with seven goals and his 11 points are two back of team leader Martin St. Louis , who has at least a point in each game this season.

Ilya Kovalchuk’s two-goal performance last week against the Capitals wasn’t enough to keep the Atlanta Thrashers from losing a third straight to Washington. After suffering an injury that will keep him sidelined for the next three to five weeks, Kovalchuk won’t get the chance to help his team in the latest meeting between the Southeast Division rivals. The Thrashers return to the ice Thursday night for the first time since losing their best player as they host Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals, winners of five straight.

Atlanta now faces the task of trying to end a three-game losing streak to the Capitals (7-2-2) without their biggest offensive threat. After losing Kovalchuk on Saturday, Atlanta fell 4-3 to San Jose, unable to complete a rally from a 3-0 deficit. Kovalchuk, who can become an unrestricted free agent in July, has been relatively durable over the last few years, missing three games in each of the last two seasons and playing all 82 contests in 2006-07.

Ovechkin, who has 11 goals and eight assists this season, has been held scoreless in only two games. He scored twice in a 4-2 win over visiting Philadelphia on Tuesday. Washington trailed 2-0 in the second period before Ovechkin tallied his first of the night. Alexander Semin, who missed the previous two games, scored the tiebreaking goal 5:24 into the third period, and Ovechkin added an empty-netter in the final seconds.

The Phoenix Coyotes are proving to be far more organized on the ice than the financially troubled organization is off it. After winning another game by spreading the scoring around, the Coyotes seek a sixth victory in eight contests when they visit the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night. This season has gotten off to a rocky start for the Phoenix organization with owner Jerry Moyes agreeing to sell the bankrupt franchise to the NHL on Monday, but the team is coming together come game time. The Coyotes (7-4-0), off to their best start since opening the 2000-01 season 9-1 with two ties, defeated Columbus 4-1 on Wednesday for their fifth win in seven games.

In the Coyotes’ 3-2 overtime win over the Blues on Oct. 15, Shane Doanand Scottie Upshall each scored in regulation for Phoenix with Ed Jovanovski adding the game winner. While the Coyotes are getting steady scoring from their offense, they’ve also been receiving solid play from goaltenders Jason LaBarbera and Ilya Bryzgalov, who have yielded a Western Conference-low 23 goals. LaBarbera made his first start in almost three weeks Wednesday and looked sharp in turning aside 31 shots.

St. Louis (5-4-1), coming off a 5-2 victory over Carolina on Wednesday, is trying to win consecutive games for the first time since starting the season with back-to-back victories. The Blues jumped out to a 3-0 lead 16 minutes into the game after totaling just three first-period goals in their previous seven contests. They had 11 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes but were outshot 22-7 the rest of the way. The Blues also need goalie Chris Mason to continue his solid play.

After a rough start two weeks ago, Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Cristobal Huet was looking for a boost. The Nashville Predators might have provided him just that.Huet tries for his third straight victory both overall and against the Predators when the Blackhawks visit the Sommet Center on Thursday night. After Huet struggled in a 4-3 loss to Dallas on Oct. 17, Chicago coach Joel Quenneville sat the netminder in the Blackhawks’ next contest - a 3-2 loss to Vancouver. Huet returned last Saturday, and made 27 saves in a 2-0 home win over Nashville, his first shutout of the season.

Huet then stopped 20 shots in Chicago’s 3-1 victory over Minnesota on Monday, improving to 4-2-1 with a 2.49 goals-against average. Patrick Kane , who has four goals and 12 assists in 16 career games against the Predators, snapped a five-game goal-scoring drought Monday, when he tallied his fourth goal of the season and the 50th of his career. The Central Division-leading Blackhawks (7-3-1) should have defenseman Brent Seabrook back after he missed the last two games with concussion-like symptoms. He had two assists at Nashville earlier this month.

Pekka Rinne could be back in net after making 12 saves Wednesday in relief of Dan Ellis to improve to 2-3-0. Rinne has lost his last three starts against the Blackhawks, though, falling to 3-4-0 with a 2.47 GAA lifetime versus Chicago. Ellis, meanwhile, was removed from a game for the second time in seven starts this season after allowing all three Minnesota goals on 10 shots. He gave up three on three shots in seven minutes of a 6-0 loss at Dallas on Oct. 14. Ellis is 2-3-1 on the season, and owns the same record with a 2.37 GAA against the Blackhawks.

Keeping the opposition off the scoreboard has been the Detroit Red Wings’ biggest issue during their surprisingly mediocre start. The Edmonton Oilers, meanwhile, are suddenly wondering why they can’t put the puck in the net. The previously high-scoring Oilers have been shut out in their past two games, and they’ll look to avoid a fourth straight loss Thursday night when they host the Red Wings. Edmonton jumped out to a 6-2-1 start by scoring nearly four goals a game, but that highly productive offensive attack has disappeared.

Edmonton (6-5-1) hasn’t scored in more than seven periods, totaling 141 minutes and 25 seconds since Dustin Penner’s eighth goal of the season in the second against Calgary. The Oilers have never been shut out three games in a row. The Oilers haven’t lost four straight since a five-game skid Oct. 22-30, 2008. Detroit (4-4-2) has had trouble at the back end, allowing 3.40 goals per game to rank among the bottom third of the league. It had lost three in a row, dropping the first two of a five-game road trip, before facing Vancouver on Tuesday.

The Red Wings are averaging 45.5 shots over their last two games after not surpassing 37 in their first eight. Defensively, though, there’s more concern. Osgood has been pulled twice and is 3-2-2 with a 3.40 goals-against average. Jimmy Howard, who replaced Osgood in Vancouver, is 1-1-0 with a 2.15 GAA in his past three games—one start. The Red Wings averaged 38.8 shots in winning all four games against the Oilers last season, outscoring them 19-8 to move to 7-0-4 in the last 11 meetings. The last five matchups in Edmonton have been decided by one goal, with Detroit going 3-0-2.

Injuries are mounting for the Vancouver Canucks, and losing goaltender Roberto Luongo for at least two games might be the biggest blow. Facing the surprising Los Angeles Kings won’t help either. The Canucks look to withstand a growing list of absences Thursday night when they visit Los Angeles. Vancouver (6-6-0) has eight players out with injuries, including Luongo, who will miss at least the next two games due to a hairline fracture in one of his ribs. The All-Star suffered the injury during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Toronto, when a shot from the corner caught him through a soft spot in his padding.

The Canucks, who visit Anaheim on Friday, certainly didn’t fare well without Luongo last season, going 12-14-3 as he missed most of those games with a groin injury. Backup Andrew Raycroft, who has allowed one goal in 52 minutes over two games when Luongo was pulled by coach Alain Vigneault, will get his first start Thursday. The Canucks also recalled Cory Schneider from their AHL affiliate to serve as the backup.

The Canucks’ injuries took a scary turn in the second period Tuesday when center Ryan Johnson was carried off the ice on a stretcher after sliding headfirst into the end boards. He was taken to a hospital for further observation, though a team spokesperson said he was alert and had full movement. Despite that loss, the Kings are tied with San Jose - the reigning Presidents’ Trophy winner - for first place in the Pacific Division. That’s a vast improvement after Los Angeles finished tied with Phoenix at the bottom of the division last season.
