After a dismal start to the season, the New York Islanders are on one of their best runs in nearly two years. A matchup with a team they dominated just a few days ago could help them continue that strong play. New York looks to win its fifth straight Wednesday night when it visits the Buffalo Sabres, who were routed at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday. The Islanders began 2009-10 with nine losses in 10 games (1-4-5) before turning things around. They have won four in a row, outscoring opponents 15-5, and can win five straight for the first time since a six-game run from Feb. 12-21, 2008.

This is the second time since that stretch that New York (5-4-5) has won four in a row, also accomplishing the feat Jan. 21-Feb. 3. He didn’t register a point against Buffalo (8-2-1) on Saturday, when the Islanders posted their first shutout and set a season high in goals with five behind Jeff Tambellini’s hat trick.

Saturday’s loss snapped a four-game win streak for Buffalo, which was shut out for the first time and allowed a season high in goals. Ryan Miller entered with an 8-0-1 record and a 1.64 goals-against average before being pulled by coach Lindy Ruff after the Islanders built a 3-0 lead in the second period.

The San Jose Sharks had eight players score goals last weekend as they earned two victories and stretched their winning streak to five. They’ll try to showcase that balance again Wednesday night when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second game of their three-game road trip. San Jose (10-4-1) beat Colorado 3-1 on Friday before opening its trip with a 5-1 victory over Carolina on Sunday. Patrick Marleau recorded his team-high 11th goal after defensemen Kent Huskins and Douglas Murray each scored their first. “I think that’s a part of our team,” Huskins said. “All of our defensemen can kind of get up in the rush and make it an odd-man rush. If we can chip in goals, that’s great.”

The Sharks scored 18 goals during their five consecutive victories. Marleau had four goals and six assists in that span while Dany Heatley added three and two. Evgeni Nabokov won four starts in a row with a 1.47 goals-against average in that stretch for San Jose, which faces Detroit on Thursday. Nabokov is 17-4-2 with a 1.80 GAA against Columbus (7-5-1).

Heatley had three goals and an assist in a 6-3 home victory over Columbus on Oct. 8. The Sharks went 6-0-2 in their last eight meetings with the Blue Jackets. Columbus lost its last two home games, but rallied for a 5-4 overtime win at Washington on Sunday. Raffi Torres tied the game twice in the third period and R.J. Umberger scored on the power play in the extra session.

With Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals are one of the most dynamic offensive teams in the NHL. Without their injured star right wing, the Capitals will try to transition into being more defensive-minded as they visit the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night. Ovechkin - the reigning two-time Hart and Richard Trophy winner - is listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury suffered in a 5-4 overtime loss to Columbus on Sunday. He was off to a torrid start with an NHL-best 14 goals and ranked second in the league with 23 points as the Capitals (8-2-4) totaled 52 goals in racing to an early lead in the Southeast Division.

Coach Bruce Boudreau now wants his team to tighten defensively as opposed to filling the void left by Ovechkin’s departure offensively, which carries more urgency after Washington gave up nine goals in overtime defeats to the New York Islanders and Blue Jackets the last two games. Washington has won three straight on the road and gotten at least one point in its last nine overall (6-0-3). While the Capitals are missing their best forward, the Devils (8-4-0) may get one of their top ones on the ice for the first time this season.

Elias, who had three goals and four assists in four games versus Washington last season, was afforded the luxury of rehabilitating his injury gradually thanks to New Jersey’s impressive road start. The Devils became the fifth team in NHL history to open 7-0 away from home after a 2-1 shootout victory over Tampa Bay on Saturday.

While the Florida Panthers are showing signs that their dismal start could be turning around, things just keep getting worse for the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina’s most recent victory came against the Panthers on Oct. 9, but the visiting Hurricanes will be without star center Eric Staal as they try to repeat the feat and avoid a 10th straight loss Wednesday. The Hurricanes’ worst start in franchise history has been shocking after the team reached the Eastern Conference finals last season and brought back most of its key players. Carolina (2-8-3) has had major problems all over the ice during its 0-6-3 skid and shown little progress, having been outscored 16-4 in its last three games.

The Panthers are certainly feeling more confident after winning on the road on consecutive nights over the weekend, including an impressive 4-0 victory over St. Louis on Saturday. They had lost eight of their previous nine.

Perhaps most promising was that Tomas Vokoun stopped 34 shots for his first shutout of the season on the heels of a sluggish start. Playing behind a defense that had allowed an average of 36.6 shots through his first nine appearances, Vokoun had a 3.65 goals-against average entering Saturday’s game. The Hurricanes chased Vokoun last month after scoring five goals on 26 shots, but the veteran is 4-1-2 with a 2.54 GAA when facing Carolina at home since he joined the Panthers. Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward has won four of his six starts at Florida.

A pair of matchups with two of the NHL’s top teams put an end to the Calgary Flames’ recent high-scoring ways. They’ll look to get back on track offensively Wednesday night when they face the Dallas Stars, another club that shut them down this season. The Flames (7-4-1) put together their second three-game winning streak of the season from Oct. 16-24, outscoring opponents 16-8. That run ended abruptly in a 3-2 loss to Northwest Division-leading Colorado last Wednesday, and Calgary suffered a 3-1 defeat to Detroit on Saturday.

The Flames settled for a 3-2-0 homestand, and coach Brian Sutter wasn’t happy with the way it ended, criticizing his top line of captain Jarome Iginla, Curtis Glencross and Craig Conroy after the most recent loss. The Stars (6-3-5) will be looking to get back in the win column themselves after dropping their last two. Dallas followed a 6-5 shootout loss to Florida on Friday with a disheartening 4-2 defeat at Nashville the next night.

The Stars led by one going into the third period, only to be outscored 3-0 in the final 20 minutes. Dallas was outshot 13-8 in the third, and fatigue may have caught up to the club after the draining game the night before. Turco could return Wednesday after the Stars’ three-day break. The veteran, who won his last three starts, is 14-8-1 with two ties and a 1.79 goals-against average versus Calgary. He lost 2-1 to Kiprusoff in each of his last two matchups with the Flames, April 2 and March 18.

With bankruptcy proceedings over, the Phoenix Coyotes should be able to remain in Glendale, Ariz. Unfortunately, they can’t avoid a trip to Colorado. Following their first loss in four games, the Coyotes look to hand the Western Conference-leading Avalanche their first home loss Wednesday night. Phoenix (9-5-0) fell 5-3 to Los Angeles on Monday night after winning seven of nine. The Coyotes, though, got some positive news Tuesday, with the closing of the bankrupt franchise’s sale to the NHL. Notification of the closure was filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, as the NHL payed about $140 million for the club. The league plans to resell the team, preferably to an owner that won’t move the franchise.

The Avalanche play three straight and four of five at home, where they have outscored opponents 16-7. Colorado is coming off a 3-0 loss to Vancouver on Sunday night, failing to give goaltender Craig Anderson any support. The Avalanche were shut out after being held to one goal in a loss to San Jose on Friday night.Anderson, who tied an NHL record with 10 wins in October, has played every minute for the Avalanche and owns a 2.11 goals-against average.

The Coyotes needed a clutch effort from Bryzgalov in a shootout to win their previous game, 3-2 against Anaheim on Saturday night Doan had a goal and an assist against Los Angeles to take over the team lead with 12 points (four goals, eight assists). He has six goals and 10 assists in his last 12 games versus Colorado. Doan, the seventh overall pick in the 1995 draft, will get another chance to mentor the eighth selection in 2008, Mikkel Boedker. The 19-year-old winger was recalled Tuesday. He was held off the scoresheet in five games with the Coyotes this season before being sent to San Antonio of the AHL.
